The call on the Ministry of Agriculture yesterday was part of an ongoing process of meeting with key stakeholders with a view of advancing the course of students of the University of the Gambia.
The team led by President Fatou Jeng,wasted no time in highlighting to Hon.Minister Jallow some of the the areas which the Ministry could collaborate with the UTGSU. Amongst the trending issues was the plight of students especially those of the School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences.
Insufficient lecturers, farming implements, no laboratory for carrying out research, and above all, University students’ offering Agriculture are less privileged in terms of employment opportunities .They urged the minister to come to the aid of those students.
The UTGSU Minister of Agriculture and Environment, Abdoulie Barry on his part pleaded with the Hon.Minister to support in building a relationship between The UTG and Maryland University,like it has with other Universities in Africa.
He also added that, the minister should come to the aid of the students in establishing a poultry farm, as the farm will not only serve as a fun-raising avenue but also a research center for students.
The President, Fatou Jeng said, Universities are ranked based on research and publication. She urged the minister to stretch their financial muscles to partner and support the UTGSU research competition which would solve societal challenges.
She also requested a partnership with the ministry for the 2019 Students Week.
Musa Baldeh the IPRO,said the students of UTG want to take up the responsibility of embarking on research, as it is done in other Universities;to inform policies of the government and private sectors.
The Minister of Agriculture, Hon.Omar J Jallow, pledged to support the UTGSU with 2,000 birds, structure and feed. He said he will facilitate a session between The UTG and Mary Land University when they visit the Gambia in September.
He applauded the union for their exemplary leadership style citing that the future of the country lies in the hands of the young people.This is why his ministry will support the research competition and the next UTGSU Students Week.
He concluded by saying that all what has been discussed should be put in Black and white and sent to his PS to facilitate from their partners such as FAO to support.
